THE
LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
The basic purpose of the lymphatic system -
besides its important role in the immune defense - is to drain
substances
from the interstitial tissues. These substances are Protein, Water,
Cells and Fat (in the digestive system).
The lymphatic system returns most of these substances back into the
blood system.
WHAT IS LYMPHOEDEMA?
When the
lymph channels become inflammed, obstructed or are removed (resulting
from cancer treatment),
the protein rich lymph fluid accumulates in the soft tissue and causes
swelling.
The swelling mostly occurs in the extremities but can also occur in the
face, trunk, abdomen or genital area.
Lymphoedema is a progressive as well as chronic condition and will not
dissapear.
